A rower rests on his oars in a slim yellow single scull on a calm river, his reflection mirrored in the still water, with autumn trees and stone and iron bridges behind him. Thomas Eakins painted his friend Max Schmitt, a champion amateur oarsman, on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia in 1871; Eakins painted himself as the rower in the middle distance. This print reproduces the original oil on canvas, now in the public domain, from a high-resolution open-access image by The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
