For the one who keeps a hummingbird feeder full all summer: sword-billed hummingbirds, whose bills are longer than their bodies, perch and hover beneath a hanging pink-and-gold trumpet flower. John Gould and H.C. Richter drew and lithographed this plate for A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-Birds (c. 1849-1861), and every copy was colored by hand. This print reproduces the original hand-colored lithograph, now in the public domain, from a high-resolution scan by the National Gallery of Art (Open Access).
