For the one who keeps a hummingbird feeder full all summer: tiny Scintillant hummingbirds, rust-orange with a flash of red at the throat, dart among sprays of lilac blossom. John Gould and H.C. Richter drew and lithographed this plate for A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-Birds (c. 1849-1861), and every copy was colored by hand. This print reproduces the original hand-colored lithograph, now in the public domain, from a high-resolution scan by the National Gallery of Art (Open Access).
