Artwork source: Public domain (Cat with black markings and rose mallow, Tachibana Morikuni, woodblock-printed book, 1720) - Library of Congress LC-DIG-jpd-02429 · View the original. Reproduced in full from an archival scan of the public-domain original — not redrawn, not AI-generated.

A round, spotted cat sits beneath tall rose mallow blossoms and grasses, its coat covered in inky rings, beside a few lines of brushed text. This page comes from a woodblock-printed picture book by the Osaka artist Tachibana Morikuni, published in 1720, and shows the right-hand page of the spread. This print reproduces the original, now in the public domain, from a high-resolution scan by the Library of Congress.
