For the curious kid who turns over every stone in the garden: a small tortoiseshell and a red admiral share the page with a little mole cricket, plate XI from The Four Elements (Ignis), the album of insects Joris Hoefnagel painted on vellum for the Holy Roman Emperor (c. 1575-1590). This print reproduces the original watercolor and gouache on vellum, now in the public domain, from a high-resolution scan by the National Gallery of Art (Open Access).
