For the one whose garden fills with butterflies every summer: a brimstone, a painted lady and a clouded yellow rest inside a gold oval, plate XIV from The Four Elements (Ignis), the album of insects Joris Hoefnagel painted on vellum for the Holy Roman Emperor (c. 1575-1590). This print reproduces the original watercolor and gouache on vellum, now in the public domain, from a high-resolution scan by the National Gallery of Art (Open Access).
