For the grandparents whose farmhouse is never quiet when the grandchildren visit: in Edward Hicks' Peaceable Kingdom of about 1834, three small children sit and play among a lion, an ox, a bear, a leopard and a wolf, while far off on the riverbank William Penn makes his treaty with the Lenape. Hicks, a Quaker preacher from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, painted the scene after the prophecy in Isaiah 11 again and again for the rest of his life. This print reproduces the original painting, now in the public domain, from a high-resolution open-access image by the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
Why you'll love it
• Children and animals together in one warm, crowded, happy scene
