The clipper ship Racer drives through steep grey-green swells under a press of canvas, her long dark hull heeling to the wind while a rocky headland and a distant sail sit on the horizon. This hand-colored lithograph was published by Nathaniel Currier in New York in 1854, drawn on stone by Charles Parsons after a painting by James E. Buttersworth. The printed caption below the picture lists the ship's dimensions and her builders, Currier & Townsend of Newburyport, Massachusetts. This print reproduces the original, now in the public domain, from a high-resolution scan by The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
